The 1.250 km long Awash river is the life line for millions of people and its basin is being used intensively. Because of the increasing industrialization and intensive agriculture, the basin has become very important for the economic growth of Ethiopia. However, in recent years, pollution has also increased as well as the pressure on the water supply. This has led to much tension between water users.
Various projects in the Awash River Basin address the issue of improved water management, improved water quality and improved access to water in the basin. Several actors are involved, such as the Ethiopian government, companies, water authorities and NGOs. The ultimate aim of these projects is for the inhabitants of the Awash River Basin to benefit from the available water and for the eco-system of the river to recover.
The map below shows the changes in the basin. This is where the various projects take place and where you can find images, obtained results and stories.
